36th Black Maria Film Festival at Flying Monkey Theatre, June 24

Sponsored by the Film Co-op, the Black Maria Film Festival “Binge” will be presented in Flying Monkey Arts theatre, second floor south from 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The Black Maria Film Festival “Binge” includes all you can watch for $10. The Black Maria’s Documentary Matinee kicks off at 4:00 PM and runs until 6:00PM. There is a dinner and discussion break at 6:00 PM and the Black Maria’s Evening of Shorts resumes at 7:00PM. Cafe tables will be set up around the theatre and lounge with coffee and desserts by Pizzelle’s, snacks and sandwiches from Happy Tummy, or bring along take out from Chef Will’s Palate or a picnic from home.

The Black Maria Film Festival attracts and nationally showcases the works of highly accomplished independent filmmakers and is a project of the Thomas A. Edison Media Arts Consortium, an independent non-profit organization in residence at NJ City University’s Department of Media Arts. It was founded in 1981 as a tribute to Thomas Edison’s development of the motion picture at his laboratory, dubbed the”Black Maria” film studio, the first in the world, in West Orange, N.J. The Black Maria Film Festival has been awarded the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Arts Citation for Excellence for eight consecutive years.

The Black Maria Film Festival “Binge” features a collection of stellar works touring with the festival this season. The films include animation, documentary, experimental, and narrative from the top award winning works chosen by the festival jury. One of the works featured in the Documentary Matinee program is “Bastard Child” by Knutte Wester, a contemporary artist and filmmaker from Sweden, that premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in November 2016.
